Question 304:

Is Jesus Christ the creator of the universe? If so, in what sense?

Answer:

Christians, too, believe that God is the creator of the universe. They also believe that through the life, actions, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ God has said something real and definitive about himself, and that is that he himself is Love and Mercy. Jesus Christ is the creator of the universe in the sense that God not decide to be Love and Mercy in the historical Jesus. He has always been that, including as creator. Because of this the creation narrative does not (only) tell how the world was created but for what purpose it was created: Because it was created by God, the loving and merciful one, it has one goal: Within it, love and mercy, reconciliation and harmony shall be realised. Only then is creation truly God’s creation - that is its purpose, or to use the Greek word, its logos. When St John’s gospel says that Jesus Christ is the logos of God (the Word of God) who was with God from the beginning and who was God, then this is what it means.
