Question 160:
If Jesus has forbidden divorce, how can there be divorced and remarried priests?
Answer: In the Catholic Church of the Latin Rite married priests are the exception. In the Eastern Churches of the Byzantine and Oriental rites, which are linked to Rome, however, it is common for diocesan priests to be married. Nowhere in the universal Catholic Church, i.e. the Church linked to the Pope, is it possible for divorced and remarried priests to remain in office.
