If someone is widowed, can they get married again in Church?
If someone is widowed he or she can remarry in Church. The Codex Iuris Canonici (=CIC) of 1983 contains no prohibition in this respect. It was not the case before 1983. The CIC of 1917 included the issue of „successive bigamy. The reason for this was the original dislike of the church of second marriages. If someone married twice or three times, he was somehow tainted. According to can. 984 n.4 CIC/1917 a man who had married two or three times and whose last wife had died was considered to be irregular and could only become a priest with a special dispensation from the bishop.
