Question 256:

Hello, we would like to ask a few questions about Holy Scripture. We are looking into the creation narratives in Genesis: What do the verses about “God’s spirit”, “God’s face”, “God’s rest” [that God rests], “God’s walk through the garden” mean? Could you explain the literal meaning of these verses or how we should interpret them? Did God also speak to Cain or did he only speak to Adam? Many thanks in advance for your interest.

Answer:

This question addresses two different points: (1) the meaning of anthropomorphic statements, i.e. speaking of God in a humanising manner. (2) did God speak to Cain?

Re (1) Please see the first step of the answer to the previous question 257. It explains the kind of purpose of anthropomorphic statements in the bible.

Re (2) In the narrative of Cain and Able in chapter 4 of the book of Genesis God speaks directly to Cain and he answers him (see Genesis 4:6-16).
