Question 278:
Who is the “Prince of the world” mentioned in John 14:30? From a Christian point of view Jesus (peace and blessings be upon all prophets) no other prophet shall follow.
Answer:
In John’s Gospel the expressions: “Prince of the world” or “ruler of this world” refer to Satan. Satan (cf. John 14:30; 16:11) ruled the world (1 John 5:19); Jesus’ death releases all who believe in him from the power of Satan. cf. John 3:35: “The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.” According to the Father’s will everything is “in the hands” of the Son. This is the basis for this Kingdom (John 12:13-5) which he will institute after he has been raised (crucifixion and resurrection). Raised to the right hand of the Father in glory (John 17:5) Christ will send his Holy Spirit (John 7:39) and through him spread his rule across the whole world. This explains why, from the point of view of the Christian faith in the period after the resurrection Christ and his sending out of the Holy Spirit no religious teacher can be believed and trusted if and in far as his teachings contradict those of Jesus Christ.
