In the bible God says of himself: “I am the God of gods”. Who are these gods?
When the bible speaks of God as the God of gods it is saying that the one true God who is worshipped by the people of God and who is called “YHWH” in Hebrew, is vastly superior to the gods worshipped by the heathens: the tribal gods, the gods limited to individual countries or towns and the gods who embody power, sex, riches and victory over ones enemies etc. The “gods” in our text are therefore not real gods alongside God (polytheism) but they represent that which people believe to be “god” instead of God. That which they worship as god.
