Question 292:

Could you show me the original gospel that was written in the time of Jesus or of his disciples?

Answer:

The Christian tradition would never speak of an ‘original gospel’ written in the time of Jesus (or his disciples) as this would be misleading.  There were many things that Jesus said and did that were recorded in the memories of his contemporaries and some of these were drawn up into early written documents in the first decades after his death and resurrection.  Christian scholars speak of many of these ‘sayings gospels’ of varying lengths.  Some of this material was used as a source on which to draw by the writers of the New Testament gospels and letters and thus has been preserved.  Biblical scholars have identified passages in the gospels that they judge to come from the lips of Jesus himself through this process of memorisation and early written records.  Even if all these passages were gathered in one document, it would not equate to an ‘original gospel’ but rather fragments judged to be the direct speech of Jesus to understand how Christians see the four gospels in the New Testament and how they relate to the Good News – Gospel – of Jesus.)
